St Malachy's girls had a wonderful day at the football blitz held in Kilcoo on Friday. Local schools were well represented with 14 teams competing for entry to the Finals day.
St Malachy's were in a group with St Dallans, Warrenpoint and St Josephs, Carnacaville.
The girls first game was against St Dallan's. After a competitive start St Malachy's came out on top with great performances from Niamh King and Tara Keaveney in Midfield, and Orla Doherty, Sophie Delaney and Chloe Kidd in the forward line. Victory against St Dallan's ensured the girls went into their next game against St Joseph's full of confidence.
St Malachy's showed skill and pace from the first whistle against St Joseph's. The defence of Niamh Sloan, Dearbhla Clarke and Orla Fitzsimons superbly guarded Aimee Murray in goals. It was Aimee's debut between the posts and she looked like a natural. St Malachy's displayed great team work once again and showed the accurate passing and score taking which they have been working on with Mrs McGee. After another great team display the girls progressed to the quarter-finals.
The quarter-final was against St Ronan's, Newry. St Malachy's girls were composed from the beginning and played with confidence and precision. Helen O' Prey showed great pace in the forward line and made great opportunities for her team mates. The girls were excellent and had several terrific spells of possession which resulted in well taken scores. Another great display from the girls ensured they continued to the semi-final stage.
The teams that made it to the semi-final stage all progressed to the Finals Day which will be held later in May.
St Malachy's girls can look forward to another opportunity to showcase their great sporting attitude and skills.
Well done too everyone involved!
